Physical Fitness

Weekly movement classes involve stretching and improvisational dance, aerobic exercise, and strength training. Students participate in a variety of fitness activities including yoga, dance, and soccer—our organized activities are designed to promote community building and emphasize cooperation among students. We applaud each student's efforts and minimize competition. Students also have generous amounts of unstructured outdoor recess each day—30 minutes at lunch and often an additional break in the morning. Our middle school students take an Outdoor Education and Leadership program, a sequential, skills-oriented approach to being safe and flourishing in the outdoors.

Our Original Play practice is also a vehicle for physical exercise. Students tumble and play on the Original Play mat, developing a joyful and evolving repertoire of movements, each week becoming more aware of how to play safely. On the mat, we learn (or rediscover) the difference between intrusive, dominating contest and safe, loving play.
