We are excited to announce the first ever Connecticut Friends School Summer Camp. The camp is based on Friends values of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship and serves grades K-8. The program will be held over a four-week session, from July 6 – July 30, weekdays from 9:00am – 3:30pm at the CFS White Barn Campus (on the Westport/Norwalk border).
Staffed by CFS teachers Tonya Burchette, Jonathan Hefter, and Nicole Mentel, as well as CFS graduates serving as interns, the camp will consist of daily community-building games, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, and a themed activity based on “The Four Elements” (air, wind, water, fire). Nature-based content will be supplemented by field trips into the community.
CFS Summer Camp fully utilizes the natural environment of our rustic 15.5-acre property by incorporating the field, trails, pond, and garden into daily activities that inspire creativity, stewardship, and play.
Both CFS students and non-CFS students are welcome to register and will be enrolled on a space available basis.

A sample camp day will include the following:
Morning Meeting: Includes a greeting, news from home, plans for the day ahead, singing, and a few minutes of silent reflection.
Group Games are non-competitive and are designed to get our campers excited for the day while building community.
Choice Activities are typically individual projects, or small group work that give the children a choice of rotating between different activities or focusing at one station for the allotted time. Examples of choice activities include: Printmaking, Microscope Studies, Fiber Arts Projects, Clay Sculpture, and Carpentry.
Group Activities will be broken into K-3 and 4-8 groups. The groups will be sharing the same experience, but in developmentally appropriate formats to serve the different age ranges. Activities include: outdoor education, gardening, art projects, cooking, woodland survival skills, science, service work, theater games, and music.
Community Building is a time each day that the campers will be using materials specifically aimed towards team building and leadership skills, and will involve all of the campers.
Every Tuesday and Thursday the camp takes off-site field trips. Tuesday’s center around recreational activities (bowling, hiking, swimming, and mini golf), while Thursday’s emphasize hands-on educational experiences (possibilities include: The Discovery Museum, The Maritime Aquarium, and Stamford Museum and Nature Center).
EARLY REGISTRATION is due by April 15, 2010.
